Live updates from Dwight Howard’s Orlando Magic all-star game

I’ll be posting updates throughout the D12 All-Star game from here at the UCF Arena. The most recent updates will be at the top. And to answer a common question, I’m not aware of an online stream of the game.

4:22, 3rd quarter: The Internet went out for a bit, keeping me from Tweeting or posting anything on here. The best highlights of the night belong to the host of this get-up, as Howard slammed home a couple of impressive dunks off alley-oops from Nelson. The old school team holds a slim lead, but it’s been a back-and-forth affair.

5:42, 2nd quarter: The old-school team goes up 40-33 after Hardaway hits his second three-pointer of the quarter. Orton put down a nice alley-oop dunk on a pass from Arenas, who still has yet to show any obvious improvement in his knee — but it’s possible he’s holding back, considering this is a game in which I could probably score 25 points. Earl Clark, meanwhile, looks like he’s playing for a contract, hustling after offensive rebounds and sprinting up and down the court.

8:01, 2nd quarter: Daniel Orton entered the game, giving Magic fans the first glimpse of him in person. He’s been blending in so far — not a rebound or a point. Hardaway continues to distribute, but there aren’t official stats being kept so it’s unclear if he’ll be approaching Scott Skiles’ assists record. It’s 30-29 old-school, and it’s becoming clear this game will come down to the wire.

1:37, 1st quarter: It’s settling into what you’d expect from a charity basketball game. A lot of threes, fast-breaks and not much defense. Lil Wayne is eating popcorn and laughing at things. Bass is dominating the scoring, but the old-school guys lead 24-22.

8:21, 1st quarter: The game starts with Penny Hardaway working on Gilbert Arenas in the post. Hardaway spins, pump fakes, ducks under Arenas and dishes to a cutting Marcin Gortat for an easy lay-up. Don’t forget Penny was once labeled the next Magic Johnson. Brandon Bass is the leading scorer so far, making several lay-ups and earning free throws on a put-back attempt. He even got in the way of a Nelson-to-Howard alley-oop attempt, thinking it was for him. Bass apparently has just one speed. It’s 13-13.

Tip-off: It’s 8:05 and the game, which was schedule for 7 p.m., is just beginning. And it’s being delayed further because the lights won’t turn on. This wouldn’t happen if David Stern and Co. were running things.

“We Will Rock You” is playing through the speakers and the starting lineups are as follows:

White team: Dwight Howard, Brandon Bass, Quentin Richardson, Gilbert Arenas and Jameer Nelson.

Black team: Drew Gooden, Mike Miller, Marcin Gortat, Penny Hardaway and Steve Francis.

Player and coach introductions: The place went absolutely crazy upon the entrance of Lil Wayne, who’s wearing red headphones and sucking on a lollipop. When his opposing coach, Floyd Mayweather was introduced shortly after, there were more boos than cheers. That prompted Howard to scold the crowd and say, “Hey, we don’t do no booing in here. Y’all give it up for Floyd.” The crowd cheered the next time, although if the guy would just fight Manny Pacquiao already, he wouldn’t get booed anywhere.

Penny Hardaway received the warmest ovation among any player, by far. Howard said, “And now, No. 1,” and the volume level grew higher than for anyone except Lil Wayne. Clearly Magic fans have let bygones be bygones.

After the player introductions, Howard began rapping over Busta Rhymes’ verse in “Look at me now,” and nobody really knew what to do. He’s having fun.

10 minutes before tip-off: Howard took the mic and briefly addressed the crowd at half-court. He thanked everyone for coming out and thanked the other players for joining him. He finished with: “I love you guys, and have fun.” Crowd goes nuts.

30 minutes before tip-off: We’re about 30 minutes from tip-off and most of the players are warming up. Marcin Gortat, Mike Miller, Drew GOoden, Trevor Ariza and Steve Francis are shooting on the South basket. Brandon Bass, Gilbert Arenas, Penny Hardaway, Quentin Richardson, Courtney Lee and Jameer Nelson are on the other end. Dwight is mingling.

45 minutes before tip-off: We just got out of Dwight Howard’s pre-game press conference. We’ll have more on that later, but he mostly answered questions about this event and why he planned to throw it. He said it was an idea that started about three weeks ago, and it came while brainstorming with Gilbert Arenas.

When Howard was asked about his Esquire interview, he deflected the question and said he’d just like to talk about the charity event. When asked about the lockout, a public relations representative stepped in and cut off the interview.

One calls himself the greatest rapper alive. The other is undefeated as a professional boxer.

They’ll both be coaching at Dwight Howard’s charity basketball game on Sunday at the UCF Arena.

Floyd Mayweather has joined Lil’ Wayne as opposing coaches at Howard’s game, which will mix former Magic players with current Magic players in an exhibition game benefiting the D12 Foundation.

And the event will be more than just a basketball game.

It will also include a number of prominent entertainment acts, including a couple dance groups that appeared on America’s Got Talent and a drummer who toured with Kanye West. Event coordinators are advising fans to arrive at 6:15 to watch the pre-show.

Below is complete list of the in-game entertainment planned for Sunday night’s game, which still has more than 1,000 tickets available. All proceeds benefit the D12 Foundation.

* Air Elite: An acrobatic dunking team that’s performed at NBA and NCAA halftime shows across the country.
* Future Funk: Two young hip-hop dancers who were semifinalists on America’s Got Talent.
* Peter Rabbit: Drummer toured with Kanye West and performed on Broadway in a Tony-winning play.
* RemoteKontrol: Popular dance crew is famous for their performances on America’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance?.
* Street Breakz: This dance group performs regularly at Universal Studios and has appeared on Monday Night Football and the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
* UCF Cheerleaders and Dancers: The cheerleading team has won two national championships in the past decade.

Thanks to former Magic dancer Heather Hesington for some of the information about these acts. You can read more about the event at her personal blog.

Justin Harper in France: Orlando Magic Rookie Pours In Career-Best 20 Points, Helps Strasbourg IG Return to .500

Photo

Justin Harper posted his second straight career-best game Saturday night, scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds to lead Strasbourg IG past Roanne, 93-80, in Ligue Nationale de Basketball action. In a team-leading 38 minutes, the Orlando Magic rookie shot 7-of-14 from the floor (2-of-4 on threes) and 4-of-5 from the foul line to bring Strasbourg back to the .500 mark at 3-3.

To those scoring and rebound totals, Harper added a steal, a block, and a turnover. Strasbourg teammate Lavoy Allen, a Philadelphia 76ers rookie, added 19 points, while Ricardo Greer scored 20 more for the victors.

Former Magic point guard Andre Barrett led Roanne with 20 points and five assists.

As the NBA lockout wears on–Saturday marked its 134th day–the combo forward’s decision to sign overseas in order to earn money and develop as a player looks increasingly more intelligent. If and when the NBA resolves its work stoppage, Harper’s contract includes a clause which will enable him to return stateside and begin his NBA career with Orlando, which acquired his draft rights from the Cleveland Cavaliers the night of the 2011 NBA Draft.

On the season, the former Richmond Spider is posting per-game averages of 13.0 points and 6.3 rebounds in 28 minutes, shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 37 percent from beyond the three-point arc.

Orlando Pinstriped Post

Current proposal would give Lakers shot at landing Dwight Howard in 2012

A new collective bargaining agreement, whenever it's reached, will impact the Orlando Magic's chances of keeping Dwight Howard (Gary W. Green, Orlando Sentinel)

So much for a new collective bargaining agreement actually helping the Orlando Magic retain Dwight Howard for years to come.

Some details of the owners’ latest — and, supposedly, last, best — offer have trickled out, and one of those terms would hamper the Magic’s ability to keep its superstar center when, and if, he becomes a free agent during the summer of 2012.

As The Associated Press has reported, the owners’ current proposal would permit teams over the luxury-tax threshold to make sign-and-trade deals over the first two years of a new collective bargaining agreement.

That stipulation would put the Los Angeles Lakers and other taxpayers back into the Howard mix in 2012, when they otherwise might not have room under salary cap to make a max offer to Howard in free agency.

To be sure, Howard has emphasized that he hasn’t made a decision about his future yet.

But he has acknowledged that playing in a large market has some allure to him.

The Lakers could have more appeal than any other large-market franchise. The Lakers have Kobe Bryant, whom Howard respects, and a long winning tradition. Southern California also boasts a warm-weather climate and Hollywood.

Player reps are scheduled to meet with union officials on Monday in Manhattan to discuss the latest offer.

Players don’t like many aspects of the owners’ proposal

As Magic player rep Chris Duhon told the Orlando Sentinel, it’s possible that Stern only has made the players more intractable. If players don’t accept the deal on the table, Stern is threatening to replace the current offer with a much worse offer, and that ploy might anger the players.

Dwight Howard’s charity game: so far, about two-thirds of the way to a sellout

Dwight Howard has lured a bunch of former Orlando Magic players, including Vince Carter, to play in his charity game Sunday night (Gary W. Green, Orlando Sentinel)

Dwight Howard’s all-star charity basketball game this Sunday night at UCF Arena is about two-thirds of the way toward a sellout.

As of 2:15 this afternoon, 3,148 tickets were available on the primary market: 1,312 in the arena’s lower sections  and 1,836 in the upper sections.

Those figures are not official. They were compiled by going onto TicketMaster and adding up, section by section, the number of seats that were able for purchase.

UCF Arena officials have said they are not authorized to give out ticket sales information to the press.

Proceeds from the event will go to Howard’s charitable group, the D12 Foundation.

In addition to Howard himself, 19 current and former Magic players have told event organizers that they plan to participate.

Those players are: Ryan Anderson, Gilbert Arenas, Trevor Ariza, Carlos Arroyo, Matt Barnes, Brandon Bass, Vince Carter, Earl Clark, Chris Duhon, Steve Francis, Drew Gooden, Penny Hardaway, Rashard Lewis, Mike Miller, Jameer Nelson, Daniel Orton, Jason Richardson, Quentin Richardson and DeShawn Stevenson.

Lil’ Wayne is going to serve as a celebrity coach.

Event organizers say tickets cost , , or 0. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com, by calling 1-800-745-3000 or at the UCF Arena box office. Students with a valid UCF identification can purchase tickets for at the arena box office.

Likely last CBA round-up for Stern, Hunter

Likely last CBA round-up for Billy Hunter (pictured), David Stern

The next time the NBA and its players battle over the next collective bargaining agreement, I suspect that the leaders for each faction will be new faces.

Commissioner David Stern and union head Billy Hunter have saddled up for their last CBA round-up.

Both are 69, and if a seven-year deal is reached (with an option at six), Stern and Hunter almost assuredly have sparred for the last time.

All signs point to NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver replacing Stern. As far as replacing Hunter, it might be as wide open as the field of Republican presidential candidates.

Stern, a lawyer by trade, has been the league’s commissioner since 1984. Hunter, a former NFL defensive back who became an attorney, has been executive director of the NBPA since 1996.

They first battled during the league’s first work stoppage in 1998.

“In a lot of ways, David and he (Hunter) are somewhat cut from the same cloth,” Dave Bing, the Hall of Fame guard, said in a 1998 New York Times article.

“They’re both can-do kind of people. They understand the marketing possibilities, what the league is and what it can become.

“I don’t know if David’s met his match, but I do know with both of them sitting down a deal will eventually be struck,” Bing continued. “They both know how much the game means.”

David Stern has run out of threats, right?

David Stern has run out of threats

Short of calling in Chris Sabian (“The Negotiator”) at the last minute, the NBA season teeters on the brink of cancellation.

One thing’s for sure: Commissioner David Stern has run out of threats.

He has already cried wolf once, giving the players an ultimatum last week (Wednesday, 5 p.m.) and then pulling back when happy hour approached.

On Thursday, he said if the union didn’t take the owners’ deal that the league’s next offer would worsen (47 percent of the pie, down from 50 and other punitive measures).

The players called his bluff, and Stern had nothing in his hand.

Stern now has painted the NBA into a corner with Threat No. 2, an instant replay of Threat No. 1.

These lockout negotiations have been all over the board so anything could happen.

But you’d think that Stern would have to stick by his guns now after telling players following the last final offer that the league will revert to the previous 47 percent ultimatum…. if the union doesn’t cry uncle.

The players, under tremendous pressure to preserve paychecks, are not expected to relent in the coming days. Their next move would to be decertification, a risky gamble, and one that likely would rule out playing basketball in 2011-12.

And then all the people at the table will lose.

Where’s Chris Sabian would you need him?

Dwight Howard’s charity event more than just basketball

Dwight Howard has called on a number of popular entertainment acts for his charity game. (Doug Benc/Getty Images)

Dwight Howard’s charity basketball game is headlined by former Orlando Magic players such as Penny Hardaway, Vince Carter and Steve Francis, who will play basketball alongside a collection of former and current Magic players to benefit the D12 Foundation.

But the event will be more than just a basketball game.

It will also include a number of prominent entertainment acts, including a couple dance groups that appeared on America’s Got Talent and a drummer who toured with Kanye West. Scott Hesington, who formerly portrayed Stuff the mascot and coordinated the entertainment for Sunday’s event, encourages fans to arrive before 6:15 for the game’s pre-show.

Rapper Lil’ Wayne will coach one of the teams, although he isn’t expected to perform. And Howard recently tweeted at hip-hop artist Flo-Rida to also join the festivities.

* D12 Drumline: These guys’ beats have rang through Amway Center during several Magic halftimes.
