Las Vegas Impact Basketball Roster Released; No Current Orlando Magic Players Participating

Photo

Starting Monday and continuing until September 23rd, 60 NBA players will team up in Las Vegas for the Impact BBall Competitive Series, which will include daily workouts, drills, and competitive games. It’s a way for players to stay sharp and in shape as the NBA lockout, which started July 1st, drags on. Check out the full lineup of players in the press release.

However, none of the 10 players the Orlando Magic have under contract for the 2011/12 season (assuming there is one) will take part in the Series, which renowned trainer Joe Abunassar of Impact Basketball has organized. That’s not to say the players won’t work out on their own, however. Further, “Impact is expecting additional commitments over the next few days,” which leaves open the possibility for a Magic player to sign up.

Former Magic players Courtney Lee and Rashard Lewis, who started for Orlando during its 2009 run to the NBA Finals, will participate. Among the higher-profile stars to participate: Zach Randolph, Chauncey Billups, Stephen Jackson, and Jermaine O’Neal.

Are you disappointed to hear the news that no Magic players have signed up? And which player do you believe most needs the extra work? Vote after the jump, if you would.

This poll expires September 16th at 1 PM Eastern.

According to Besiktas TV basketball editor Kubilay Keceli, Orlando Magic forward and Turkish international Hedo Turkoglu is pondering offers from both Turkey and Spain. Keceli reports that Turk Telekom Ankara of Turkish Basketball League is offering the 32-year-old Turkoglu up to 300,000 euros (0,000) per month. Keceli also said there is another offer from a Spanish club in the same financial range.

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard has brought the planking craze — and his sense of theater — to the Far East.

Howard is in China for an adidas promotional tour.

At a stop at a park in Beijing, he greeted a group of fans by wearing an opera mask before he participated in basketball clinics, drills and games.

He then persuaded about 100 people to plank with him on the court.

Howard also is scheduled to travel to Changchun, Wuhan and Nanjing.

Here’s Stan Van Gundy as a college basketball player (photo)

A video of Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy demonstrating his dribbling skills went viral last week, providing blog fodder and reaching No. 7 on SportsCenter’s daily top ten segment. Nothing about the relatively short, stocky coach’s image — from the mustache to the mock turtle necks — screams basketball player, so it was shocking to see him effortlessly go through the legs and behind the back at the Magic’s youth camp.

We shouldn’t be so taken aback, though — Van Gundy played in college at SUNY-Brockport, a Division III team in New York that was once coached by his father, Bill. And most college players — especially a point guard like Van Gundy — would retain some dribbling skills from their college days.

Van Gundy appeared in 104 games in four seasons at SUNY-Brockport. He averaged 10.7 points during his senior season and shot 51.2 percent for his career. An 85.9 career free-throw shooter, Van Gundy made all 33 of his free-throw attempts during his sophomore season.

Indeed, the ol’ coach can play a little ball. To see a picture of Van Gundy during his college days, click after the jump.
