Heat see familiar pattern that Bulls used against Magic

Dwight Howard’s suspension was costly against Bulls

After crushing the Bulls in the first game of their four-game series this season, the Magic would fail to win again, largely because of Chicago’s work on the boards.

Orlando routed Chicago 107-78 in the first meeting as the Magic shot 48 percent and Jameer Nelson scored 24 points. It was Carlos Boozer’s Bulls debut, and he was as ineffective as Joakim Noah, who was held without a rebound.

In the next two games, the Bulls — as they did against Miami in Game 1 Sunday — dominated the glass.

Despite 40 points from Dwight Howard, the Bulls won the second game of the series, 99-90, outrebounding the Magic 54-40, including 16-7 on the offensive end. The Bulls’ heralded defense also held the Magic to 5-of-21 from 3-point range.

In the third game — an 89-81 win by Chicago —- the Bulls outrebounded Orlando 50-30 and 17-5 on the offensive glass. See a pattern here? Also, Howard picked up his 16th technical foul and would miss the next game, against Portland. Read the rest of this entry »

Chicago Bulls – Orlando Magic | 1996 Playoffs | ECF Game 1: Orlando’s worst nightmare

For the Chicago Bulls, today’s performance was worth the wait. Chicago spent all season looking forward to a playoff rematch against the Orlando Magic, the team that eliminated the Bulls last year in the second round. This year’s ECF is Chicago’s chance for revenge. And in Game 1, revenge was both sweet and spectacular. Playing a magnificent game with passion and precision, the Bulls embarrassed Orlando, 121-83, to open the four-of-seven-game series at the United Center. It was a loss that could have disastrous consequences for the Magic, because Horace Grant suffered a hyperextended left elbow in the third quarter when he collided with his teammate Shaquille O’Neal. X-rays taken of Grant’s elbow were negative, but he left the arena in pain and he was listed as questionable for Tuesday night’s Game 2 in Orlando. If Grant cannot play, Orlando will have even more difficulty matching up with Chicago’s frontline. And even before Grant left today’s game, this was a thorough beating from the start, and Orlando was on the receiving end of the spanking. The Bulls outrebounded the Magic by an incredible 62-28 margin. Chicago opened the game with such emotion, Orlando looked like a boxer who had been stunned early, and the Magic never got off the ropes. Two minutes into the game, Chicago led, 10-0, and Michael Jordan had yet to take a shot. It was only a sign of things to come. There was no need for Jordan (21 points on 9-for-17 shooting, 7 rebounds, 4 assists) to carry the offense

Chicago Bulls – Orlando Magic | 1996 Playoffs | ECF Game 3: Pippen on fire, burns Magic

They shackled Shaquille O’Neal, stifled Anfernee Hardaway and completely discombobulated the only dimension of Dennis Scott’s game. The Chicago Bulls have come to be known as a great offensive machine in the open court, but they get their hands dirty, too. As a result, Shaq, Anfernee and their bandaged teammates looked like mud today. Because they made the Magic chip paint off the rim in the fourth quarter of an ugly 86-67 victory, the Bulls are one game from returning to the NBA finals for the first time in three years. The Magic’s point total was the second lowest in league playoff history, 3 more than Portland’s 64-point debacle 20 days ago in Game 5 of its series with Utah. Orlando entered the final period down by 63-57. In the final 12 minutes, the Magic proceeded to shoot 3-for-18 and crumble horribly under the weight of Chicago’s defense. “Guys are kind of upset, kind of embarrassed,” O’Neal said. They should be. How Orlando went from a budding Eastern Conference dynasty to another doormat for Michael Jordan and his Bulls could take a crack research team months to unearth. What is clear from Game 3 of the conference finals is that Hardaway (8-of-24 from the floor) and O’Neal (1-of-9 from the free-throw line, 5 turnovers) have a long way to go to become prime-time players along the lines of Scottie Pippen (27 points, 11-of-14 from the field, 6 rebounds, 7 assists) and Jordan (17 points on 5-for-14 shooting, 7 rebounds, 4 assists). Pippen picked up the slack today

Chicago Bulls – Orlando Magic | 1996 Playoffs | ECF Game 4: Jordan seals the sweep

His partners in the ratings game desperately wanted to salvage some pride on their home floor, but Michael Jordan was even more determined to have at least three days off. He was willing to work every angle, possible and impossible, to secure them. The baseline. The wing. Straight on from 15 feet. Off one foot or off the glass, he kept hitting net and he kept fading away — farther and farther — until Anfernee Hardaway, Shaquille O’Neal and their once-potent basketball team resembled minuscule blips from high atop the ridge. The Chicago Bulls were much closer to the pinnacle than the Orlando Magic was today because Jordan reached the climax of a yearlong vindication process by backpacking his team to a 106-101 victory in Game 4 and a sweep of the Eastern Conference finals. “Judging from the look in Michael’s eyes, we could have rode him all day today,” forward Scottie Pippen said. “I know I rode him. We all did. What’s new?” With a menacing glare attached to nearly every basket he made, Jordan erupted for 45 points, wagged his tongue, kicked up his left foot ever so slightly and walked out of Orlando Arena with a Cuban cigar tucked snugly in his blazer pocket. He made 16 of 23 shots and 10 of 14 free throws and performed the same riveting theater on the floor that carried Chicago to its last finals, in 1993, the last time the Bulls were this close to a championship. They overcame a 56-47 halftime deficit in the final seconds of the third quarter and then let Jordan do

Chicago Bulls – Orlando Magic | 1996 Playoffs | ECF Game 2: The great escape

In a city that fully believes a championship parade permit is nothing more than paperwork with a date to be filled in, the Chicago Bulls took a loud, convincing step toward the NBA finals tonight. They overcame an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat Orlando, 93-88, and take a 2-0 lead in the four-of-seven-game Eastern Conference finals. With a pressing defensive effort that was disciplined and ferocious all at once, the Bulls added one more remarkable achievement to a record-breaking season. In tonight’s magic act, the Bulls made a dominant player disappear. Shaquille O’Neal was held to 10 points and 5 rebounds in the second half, including a meaningless dunk with 5 seconds to play, after powering his way to 26 points and 11 rebounds before halftime. Surprised by Chicago double-teams in the second half, and handicapped by a backcourt that was prevented from getting him the ball nearly enough down the stretch, O’Neal produced only three shots in the fourth quarter. He made all three, but he could not make enough. Michael Jordan scored 35 points (on 9-for-21 shooting, along with 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and a block), 25 in the second half, after a 3-for-10 first-half effort that made his pre-game acceptance of the league’s most valuable player award seem like a cruel joke. But Jordan’s defensive play was just as decisive on a night when he was forced to deal with cramps in the final minutes. “It’s a crucial time of the game,” Jordan said. “What am I supposed to do

Orlando Magic discuss how confident they are vs. Bulls (video)

Jameer Nelson and the Orlando Magic played well but lost a close one to Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls. (Gary W. Green/Orlando Sentinel)

The Orlando Magic lost to the Chicago Bulls on Sunday afternoon, but they played with good energy, moved the ball on offense and came milliseconds away from taking the Eastern Conference’s top team to overtime.

The Magic forced the Bulls into 21 turnovers, keeping the close despite Chicago shooting 60 percent from the field. Ryan Anderson broke out for 28 points and 10 rebounds, and Jameer Nelson posted 17 points and 11 assists.

Playing without superstar and team captain Dwight Howard, it wasn’t a bad showing.

And that has to be a vote of confidence to the Magic as they’re lined up to take on the Bulls in the second round of the playoffs, right?

Stan Van Gundy, Ryan Anderson and Jameer Nelson discuss in the videos after the jump.

Ryan Anderson said it felt good to play so well while undermanned against the Bulls.

Jameer Nelson is trying not to look forward to the Bulls in the playoffs, but there were a lot of good things to take from Sunday’s game.

Stan Van Gundy thought the Magic did a good job defending Derrick Rose, even though he scored 39 points.
