Dirk Nowitzki and LeBron James offer two different models for a superstar such as Dwight Howard to reach the NBA Finals. (From L to R: Tony Gutierrez/Associated Press, Gary W. Green/Orlando Sentinel, Jim McIsaac/Getty)
When Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard watches the NBA Finals, he’ll see two superstar extremes.
There’s Dirk Nowitzki, the loyal and steadfast Dallas star who’s stuck with the Mavericks since being drafted in 1999. Nowitzki has played for two owners, numerous coaches and a roster that’s overturned several times during his 12-year career.
And on the other side there’s Miami Heat forward LeBron James, the league’s premier talent who’s more famous for deserting the city of Cleveland than he is for his other-worldly talent, at least among casual NBA fans.
Now the two polar opposite superstars — in terms of their team loyalty, anyway — are playing for the championship.
Both Nowitzki and James, still searching for their first championships, reached the NBA Finals in the middle of the decade.
Both lost and didn’t return till this season.
Nowitzki played in the NBA Finals in 2006. The Mavericks were then bounced in the first round in ‘07 and ‘08, lost in the West semifinals in ‘09 and again lost in the first round in 2010. And let’s be clear: These early playoff exits were not entirely a result of the Western Conference being so strong. The Mavericks were not close to championship material over that span, especially in ‘08 and ‘09 when they barely made the playoffs.
James, meanwhile, couldn’t get past the Magic or Celtics after his Cavaliers lost to the Spurs in the Finals in ‘07. Despite putting up monster numbers, he never came within a game of the NBA Finals again.
Now, Nowitzki is playing for the title with the team he’s stuck with for years.
James is playing for the title after teaming up with a couple of other superstars on a new team.
When Howard returns to the NBA Finals — as the league’s premier big man, it’s safe to assume he’ll be back at some point — will it be under the Nowitzki model or the LeBron model?

Pierce, Garnett & Howard (NBA Playoffs) Sports The Magic are undefeated in the playoffs so far. This is a great rematch with two key players back in the lineups. Nelson and Garnett were both injured the last time these two teams played in a playoff series. 2K predicts that the Celtics will defeat the Magic in 7 games. I think the Celtics will win in 6 games.
