Stan Van Gundy spent part of his July in Paris … on a business trip

Most Americans who visit Paris make the trip to stroll historic streets, eat authentic French food, see the Eiffel Tower and visit the Louvre.

Stan Van Gundy? The Orlando Magic coach crossed the Atlantic Ocean and visited the city earlier this month on a business trip. He spent time with Magic swingman Mickael Pietrus.

Van Gundy spent July 12-14 traveling from Orlando to Paris and back again to strengthen his relationship with the 6-foot-6 small forward/shooting guard from Guadeloupe.

“With most of our guys, I get the chance to see them in the summer as they come through Orlando and everything else,” Van Gundy said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “But M.P., since he’s been here [with the Magic], he goes back [to Europe] and he doesn’t get back until September.

“I think he’s a very, very important guy for us moving forward and somebody that I felt I needed to get to know a little bit better and establish better communications with. I didn’t want to wait until everybody was back in town. I went over and spent a day with him. He showed me Paris — at least showed me as much you can of Paris in six hours.

“I thought it was a very worthwhile trip.”

Pietrus averaged 8.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game during the 2009-10 season. Van Gundy occasionally said that Pietrus’ on-court energy level was too often influenced by how he was doing on the offensive end of the court.

Pietrus is a streaky shooter, but his most important role for the Magic is as a defender. Pietrus regularly is asked to defend opponents’ top scorers on the wing one-on-one. Last season, he shared that role primarily with Matt Barnes. This season, Pietrus will share that role with free-agent acquisition Quentin Richardson.

Pietrus and Richardson are expected to compete for the starting small-forward job.

Today is the critical sit-down between Chris Paul and Hornets officials (Photo by Chris Graythen, Getty Images)

New Orleans Hornets officials aren’t budging.

They are telling other teams that they have no interest in trading Chris Paul, according to an espn.com report updated this morning.

It’s difficult to say what all that means.

On one hand, the Hornets sincerely might have no plans to trade their disgruntled superstar point guard. Paul, as we’ve noted before, has limited leverage to force a trade because two years remain on his contract, plus a player option for 2012-13.

On the other hand, Hornets officials might be engaging in a bit of gamesmanship. From a PR standpoint with their fans, team officials would be making a big mistake if they indicated that they’re willing to trade Paul before their critical sit-down with him today. And, by turning away trade inquiries now, they might be driving up their asking price in future trade talks.

In other news, the Chicago Bulls seem set to add Tracy McGrady to their roster.

All that and more in this morning’s Magic and NBA links:

1. Exec: Hornets saying ‘No deals for Paul,’ espn.com, Marc Stein
The Buzz: Hornets officials are saying they won’t trade the superstar point guard.

2. New Orleans Hornets brass to meet with Chris Paul today, The Times Picayune, John Reid
The Buzz: Today is the critical sit-down between Paul and the Hornets’ triumvirate of team President Hugh Weber, new General Manager Dell Demps and new coach Monty Williams.

3. Source: Bulls prepared to add McGrady, espn.com, Marc Stein
The Buzz: A source tells Stein that the Bulls will sign T-Mac if he looks healthy in a workout with the team today and if he convinces team officials that he’s willing to accept a role as a bench player.

4. Team USA to cut 4 players by Monday, espn.com, Chris Sheridan
The Buzz: Who will be among the four players cut from the Team USA roster? Sheridan offers his educated guess.

5. Sixers’ Collins to visit Brand, Philadelphia Daily News, Phil Jasner
The Buzz: The Philadelphia 76ers’ new coach, Doug Collins, plans to meet with Elton Brand soon.

6. With 16 players signed, Kyle Weaver could be on the outside looking in, The Oklahoman, Darnell Mayberry
The Buzz: The Oklahoma City Thunder have 16 players on their roster. The league maximum is 15. Someone must go, as Mayberry writes.

7. Ex-Hawk Lorenzen Wright still missing, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Chelsea Cook
The Buzz: The former NBA player’s whereabouts are still unknown.

8. Marbury: I never rejected the Heat, New York Post, Marc Berman
The Buzz: Stephon Marbury says he never turned down an offer to join the Miami Heat. In fact, Marbury says he still would like to play for Miami.
